A Very Happy Speech Therapist

On Monday afternoon, I was very excited to see Mary for speech. We haven't had a speech session in two weeks, and I've been keeping track of all of Raquel's new words and couldn't wait to share them with Mary! These new words/phrases include: wait, hurry, don't want to, don't want it, all done, you do it, there you go, get it, go get it, look, so tired, going, match, bubbles and yes. And she's using them appropriately. Very great news!

Let's just say that Mary was beyond pleased. She hugged and hugged Raquel and told her how proud of her she was. And, Mary caved and returned with her bags of toys, making for a very happy 2 1/2 year old. Raquel even left them alone for the most part. Maybe she's learned her lession, but I seriously doubt it. Unfortunately, Raquel was not particularly vocal for speech. She had a great morning session again with Cari, and I thought she'd be raring to go, but no such luck. Maybe it's because she hasn't seen her in a couple weeks.

Tuesday Janine overlapped with Jennifer and she did great as well. Janine was very happy to see her improving so much on her PECS - that just sort of took off on Friday for some reason, and she's been pretty consistent ever since. Janine made a couple small program changes and was overall very happy.

She had another great session today with Jennifer. She was able to probe out of a few more items during ROL (receptive object labeling) so we'll need to find new targets tomorrow.

Yay!! Great news, Aunt Nita!! This is so funny...because last week, I called Riley's speech therapist and told her that Riley has so many more words that he's just not using when she's there working with him. I asked if maybe we should switch up the environment to see if he'd use those words more in a different setting, because I wanted so bad for her to hear them! She convinced me that it was COMPLETELY normal for Riley NOT to use the words during the session, and that it was even more important to her that he was using them at times where she's not here with us helping. Anyway...all that to say, I am so excited to hear about Raquel's progress in speech...just because I know how awesome it is to finally start hearing more words out of my stubborn boy!! haha!! Soo cool!! Keep the updates coming! Love you!

Hi Lauren! I often felt as though it was "offensive" to a speech therapist not to hear all the vocals, but Mary has dismissed that as well. This week she told me that she prefers to hear me tell about all of Raquel's functional communication in everyday living vs. Raquel saying, "train" when she holds up one during a session. I get very frustrated that Mary misses out on a lot of talking that I really want her to hear. But, it's because of her that it's coming out, so I'm now keeping a list of new words to report to her each week. That seems just as good for her to hear - and it's sometimes even better!

Looking forward to seeing all of you real soon. So excited you are moving home! Big hugs to everyone. We love you!
